Hanjin Athens to Unload Damaged Containers in Limassol

Jun 30, 2014 10:48

After a thorough assessment, the damaged 250 containers from the "Hanjin Athens" will be safely unloaded at the Limassol port. Concerns surrounding the potential dangers of the cargo had initially prompted calls from various organizations and residents for the vessel to divert to another location. The ship docked in Limassol on the evening of June 28, allowing for the implementation of essential procedures to safely unload the fire-damaged containers alongside the effluent resulting from firefighting efforts that utilized seawater. Experts, both local and international, have confirmed that the unloading process will adhere to stringent safety protocols. Additionally, approximately 1,700 tons of water in the ship’s hold will also be managed by a licensed disposal company. The shipping company has committed to covering all associated costs and responsibly transferring any hazardous materials off-site. The "Hanjin Athens" arrived in Cyprus on May 30 following a fire that was isolated to one of its holds, and remained anchored off Limassol for two weeks amidst apprehensions from port workers about possible chemical hazards within the containers.

Hanjin Athens Fire: 200 Containers Damaged in Suez Canal Incident

Jun 13, 2014 20:45

On May 6, 2014, the container ship Hanjin Athens experienced a significant fire in its No. 2 hold while traveling south of the Suez Canal. The vessel was loaded with cargo from several major Asian ports, including Pusan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Yantian, and Singapore, destined for various European ports such as Port Said, Naples, Livorno, and La Spezia. In response to the emergency, hull interests promptly engaged Svitzer, professional salvors renowned for their expertise in maritime crises. Fire-fighting efforts were conducted under a fixed form contract, but the incident left a considerable number of containers in the hold flooded due to water used to douse the flames. Ultimately, the fire was extinguished, but it resulted in damage to at least 200 containers. After battling the blaze, the Hanjin Athens arrived at Limassol Anchorage on June 6 to offload the compromised cargo. A team of experts was dispatched to survey the containers and confirmed that there were no hazardous materials listed on the cargo manifest, including items classified under class 1 (explosives) and class 7 (radioactive substances). By June 13, the vessel remained anchored off Limassol, awaiting clearance to unload; continuing on its intended course could pose risks. Albatross Adjusters Ltd. initiated a request for General Average security from all involved cargo and container shell interests. A task team was also established to evaluate the safety of permitting the ship to dock at Limassol port for unloading. Limassol Port authorities sent specialists onboard to verify the ship’s manifest and cargo, conducting all necessary tests according to standard protocols. Final results were anticipated shortly, with hopes that cargo unloading could proceed on June 17 or 18 if all checks returned favorably.
