Collision Between Container Ships on Kiel Canal Disrupts Voyage

Feb 07, 2025 10:03

A maritime incident occurred on February 6, 2025, when the container vessel 'Essence', traveling from Kotka to Rotterdam, collided with the 'X-Press Mülhacen' (IMO: 9365960), which was en route from Rotterdam to Gdynia. The collision took place at 7:05 a.m., within the densely fogged confines of the Kiel Canal, specifically near the north port of Kiel and in front of the Holtenau locks. At the time of the incident, the 'X-Press Mülhacen' was preparing to enter the large north chamber of the Holtenau locks, while the 'Essence' was navigating from the south chamber. The proximity of the two vessels resulted in a scrape against one another, necessitating a halt in their respective journeys. Following the collision, the 'Essence' docked at the Schwartenbek siding close to Suchsdorf, allowing for a brief assessment of damages. The 'X-Press Mülhacen', after completing initial checks, was permitted to continue to the roadstead of Holtenau, where it anchored at the coordinates 54° 23' N 010° 11' E at 8:50 a.m. Responding swiftly, the Kiel water police deployed the police boat 'Stör' to investigate the circumstances of the collision. Officers conducted interviews with the crews of both vessels, as well as the pilots aboard each ship. Experts from classification societies thoroughly examined the technical conditions of the ships involved. The 'Essence' was cleared to resume its journey at approximately 11 a.m. and proceeded to Brunsbüttel, where it docked at the Navy dolphins shortly after 6 p.m. It ultimately set sail again on February 7 at 4 a.m. UTC, with an estimated arrival at its destination port by February 8. Meanwhile, the 'X-Press Mülhacen' remained anchored in the Kiel Fjord until 8:20 p.m. before continuing its voyage to Gdynia, also with an estimated arrival of February 7.
