The distress signal concerned the US-registered sailing vessel 'Makai', a 1985 Tayana Vancouver 42, registered out of Tracy’s Landing, Maryland. The 'Makai' was reported to be disabled and drifting approximately 180 nautical miles east-southeast of Virginia Beach, Virginia, at coordinates 36-19.36 N and 072-15.24 W. The skipper of the 'Makai' requested assistance to be evacuated from the yacht. All nearby vessels were urgently notified to keep a lookout and provide assistance as necessary. The crew of the 'Etoile', comprised of skilled Filipino sailors, promptly navigated their ship to the location of the stranded yacht and successfully rescued the distressed sailor. The 'Makai', meanwhile, was left adrift in the vast ocean.
