Eugen Maersk Faces Technical Emergency on Elbe River

Mar 05, 2018 10:09

On March 3, 2018, at approximately 12:50 a.m., the container ship Eugen Maersk encountered a technical issue shortly after departing from Hamburg. This unexpected malfunction necessitated an emergency anchoring on the Elbe River, near Stade, causing significant disruption as the river was closed to vessels exceeding 120 meters in length for over an hour. To stabilize the situation, tugboats were dispatched to assist the Eugen Maersk while the crew addressed the technical challenges. Once repairs were successfully completed, the ship resumed its journey, arriving at the bustling Port of Antwerp on March 4 at 5:00 a.m. The Eugen Maersk then docked at berth 1742 at PSA in the Deurgang Dock, completing its voyage despite the earlier hiccup.

Maersk Line Enhances E-class Fleet with 1,300 TEU Capacity Boost

Aug 05, 2016 21:57

Maersk Line is set to elevate its fleet by upgrading its eight E-class vessels, each with a capacity of 15,550 TEU, to accommodate an additional 1,300 TEU. This ambitious initiative includes raising the accommodation block and wheelhouse, as well as enhancing the height of lashing bridges to support an extra tier of containers. This strategic move not only aims to extend the operational lifespan of these decade-old ships but also underscores Maersk's commitment to maximizing vessel capacity in a competitive shipping landscape. The decision for this upgrade follows a significant incident involving one of the E-class vessels, the Emma Maersk, which narrowly avoided sinking at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal in early 2013 due to a hull fracture caused by a malfunctioning stern thruster. Post-incident, Maersk implemented a ban on the use of stern thrusters across its Emma-class fleet until necessary modifications could be enacted. This refurbishment project, which features the installation of a new bulbous bow to enhance efficiency at reduced speeds, as well as a newly designed propeller, is being executed at CSIC Qingdao Beihai Shipyard in China—a partner that has handled most of Maersk Line’s ship upgrades in the past. The first ship to complete these modifications is the Eugen Maersk, which has now rejoined the 2M AE1/Shogun Asia-North Europe service, marking a significant step in Maersk’s strategic upgrade plan.
