Significant Fuel Spill in Vancouver's English Bay

Jan 23, 2023 12:33

A notable fuel leak incident unfolded on the morning of January 21, 2023, when the vessel 'Europe' suffered a spill in Vancouver's English Bay. Initial reports indicate that between 60 and 100 liters of fuel entered the waters. Responding swiftly, authorities have commenced a cleanup operation in the vicinity of the Port of Vancouver, particularly around the Spanish Banks beach area. The emergency was first detected by a pilot from the seaplane service, Harbor Air, who observed the leak at approximately 11:40 a.m. Following thorough investigations, the Canadian Coast Guard confirmed that the source of the leak was indeed the 'Europe,' which had docked in Vancouver on January 15 after departing from Prince Rupert on January 13. A containment boom was promptly deployed around the vessel to mitigate environmental impact. In response to this incident, the Greater Vancouver Integrated Action Plan has been activated, with various government levels notified of the situation. The Western Canadian Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) based in Saanich has also dispatched teams to the site. By January 22, the spill situation remained stable with no further leakage reported. Transport Canada is collaborating with the ship's captain and owner to investigate the cause behind the leakage. ExxonMobil and Danaos Shipping Achieve Groundbreaking Extension of Piston Overhaul Interval

Feb 23, 2012 09:19

In a significant advancement for marine engineering, ExxonMobil has partnered with Danaos Shipping, a maritime leader based in Athens, to extend the piston overhaul interval to an impressive 42,575 hours. Initially set at 16,000 hours, this extended interval was tested on the containership CSCL Europe, which is equipped with a Doosan-MAN B&W 12-cylinder K98MC-C main engine operating on Mobilgard 570 cylinder oil. Remarkably, the results revealed that cylinder number 11 exhibited exceptional condition, showcasing an extremely low wear rate of the liner, even under conditions of slow steaming and reduced oil feed rates. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in enhancing engine performance and efficiency in the shipping industry.
