Coal-Carrying Vessels Stalled at Haldia Port Amid Rate Dispute
Calcutta, April 15: Two vessels, MV Eva and MV Petral Bulker, laden with Australian coking coal, have been immobilized at Haldia Port for four consecutive days. This situation has arisen due to an ongoing dispute between Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) and Ripley, a cargo operator affiliated with the family of former Trinamul MP Srinjoy Bose, regarding newly instituted shore-handling rates. CPT has issued a show cause notice to Ripley, which has previously operated with a near-monopoly in the port region due to its political connections. The dispute centers around allegations that Ripley is demanding rates exceeding the ones set by the port, effective April 1. Both vessels, currently docked at berths 8 and 13, are transporting a combined total of approximately 19,000 tonnes of coal intended for Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) plants located in Durgapur, Burnpur, and Bokaro.
