Ever Ace: The World's Largest Container Ship Docks in Hamburg for the First Time

Sep 10, 2021 08:36

On the evening of Wednesday, September 8, 2021, the monumental container ship Ever Ace made its inaugural visit to the Port of Hamburg, arriving right at the evening's high tide at 19:00. This vessel, boasting an impressive slot capacity of 23,992 TEU, currently holds the title of the largest container ship in the world. Measuring 400 meters in length and 61.5 meters in width with a maximum draught of 16 meters, Ever Ace surpasses its predecessor, the 'HMM Algeciras,' by accommodating an additional 28 TEU. Constructed at the renowned Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea with a hefty investment of around 150 million USD by Taiwan's Evergreen Marine, the Ever Ace departed from the shipyard on July 28 bound for Qingdao, China. This cutting-edge vessel is the first in a series of six similar mega-carriers that are being built at the same facility. The arrival of Ever Ace marks a significant achievement for the Port of Hamburg, highlighting successful navigation enhancements. "The docking of the largest container ship in the world shows that the Port of Hamburg has effectively adapted to the demands of modern shipping," stated Axel Mattern, Executive Director of Port of Hamburg Marketing. He emphasized that the fairway adjustments and the widening of the passing box make Hamburg a competitive hub for larger vessels, ensuring its continued relevance in the European shipping landscape. The improvement of navigating draughts has been implemented in two phases, with the first already allowing container ships to benefit from an increase in draught capacity ranging from 0.3 meters to 0.9 meters. Completion of the full clearance process is anticipated by the end of this year. In service on the Ocean Alliance's NEU6 route, Ever Ace connects Northern Europe and Asia, recognized by Evergreen as the China-Europe-Mediterranean Service (CEM). Its route includes stops in major ports such as Hamburg, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Colombo, Tanjung Pelepas, Kaohsiung, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Taipei, Yantian, and more. Notably, during its maiden voyage, Ever Ace achieved a remarkable milestone by transporting 21,718 TEU, breaking the previous record held by Jacques Saadé by 285 containers, as reported by industry service Alphaliner.
