Major Container Loss Incident in Callao Bay: Over 50 Containers Lost from 'Ever Lunar'

Aug 04, 2025 09:21

On August 1, 2025, the container ship 'Ever Lunar' reported a significant loss of approximately 50 containers while anchored at position 12° 01' S 077° 12' W in Callao Bay, situated roughly 3.9 nautical miles northwest of San Lorenzo Island. The vessel had been docked at Callao for cargo operations but departed amidst a tsunami warning, leaving some containers unsecured. After mooring at anchorage 1, the ship faced intense rolling conditions that caused containers at the stern to tumble into the sea. Among the fallen cargo, one container was precariously hanging off the side of the ship, while three others fell onto the deck. The incident resulted in countless containers drifting away, with many spilling their contents—primarily cardboard—into the water. In response to the situation, the Port of Callao was temporarily closed, impacting operations at various terminals including DP World and APM Terminals, as well as halting vessel traffic in the vicinity. Maritime security alerts were issued, prohibiting movement across the bay. At the time of the incident, maritime conditions included thick fog, overcast skies, and high humidity attributed to the South Pacific Anticyclone. The National Emergency Operations Centre (Coen) from the National Institute of Civil Defence (Indeci) confirmed that the lost containers did not carry any hazardous materials. Recovery operations were set to be conducted by specialized salvage companies under the oversight of the Maritime Authority. Fishermen and eager onlookers embarked on small boats to retrieve floating boxes, many of which remained sealed, that had washed ashore. In addition, two patrol boats, 'Costa Sama' and 'Río Chira' (MMSI: 760001220), were dispatched to secure the area while tugs, namely 'Ram Vigo' (MMSI: 677900000) and 'Tiamat' (IMO: 8112184), were called in to assist in the removal of the floating containers. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the mishap, with the safety of the crew confirmed. By the afternoon of the same day, following additional technical evaluations, DICAPI announced a downgrade in the alert level, introducing a Level IV partial closure affecting maritime traffic within the Central Zone of Callao Bay and specific northern and southern zones. Eventually, normal operations resumed at the port, with recovery of the lost containers anticipated to take between 15 and 20 days.
