Charges Filed Against Evridiki Navigation and Chief Engineer for Record Tampering

May 21, 2019 10:05

A significant legal case has emerged involving Evridiki Navigation Inc., Liquimar Tankers Management Services Inc., and Chief Engineer Nikolaos Vastardis of the tanker "Evridiki," as announced by the US Department of Justice on May 16, 2019. A federal grand jury in Wilmington, Delaware, issued a four-count indictment related to the improper management of wastewater and pollution control records. The charges stem from events that occurred on or around March 11, 2019. Vastardis allegedly failed to accurately keep an oil record book, neglecting to document discharges of bilge water originating from machinery spaces as well as malfunctions of the vessel’s oil filtering system. In addition, during a US Coast Guard inspection, he reportedly provided misleading statements about the operation of the pollution control equipment and conducted demonstrations intended to manipulate the equipment, falsely indicating that the discharge of oily bilge water was within acceptable limits. Both Liquimar Tankers Management Services and Evridiki Navigation, alongside Vastardis, are accused of violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships, a US regulation aligned with MARPOL standards. The allegations include falsification of records, obstruction of justice, and making false statements. The investigation was carried out by the US Coast Guard Investigative Service, underscoring the commitment to upholding maritime environmental regulations.
