Coast Guard Conducts Urgent Medevac Near Ambrose Channel
On September 12, 2018, US Coast Guard personnel executed a critical medical evacuation of a 78-year-old man who was experiencing chest pains on the tanker 'Evrotas' near Ambrose Channel, New Jersey. The emergency unfolded around 9:30 p.m. when watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector New York command center received an urgent call for medical assistance. After consultation via conference call between the Coast Guard flight surgeon and the ship's medical officer, it was determined that a rescue crew from Station Sandy Hook would provide the most efficient evacuation solution. At approximately 12:15 a.m., a 47-foot motor lifeboat arrived on site, accompanied by emergency medical technicians from the National Park Service. The rescuers rapidly transferred the ailing man and swiftly transported him to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, where he was handed over to EMS for further care. He was subsequently taken to Monmouth County Medical Center, where his condition was reported as stable. The timely response of the Coast Guard and allied teams undoubtedly played a crucial role in ensuring the man's safety during this medical emergency.
Daring Medevac Amid Choppy Seas: Kirkwall Lifeboat in Action
On the evening of May 4, 2012, at 8:57 PM, the Kirkwall Lifeboat 'Margaret Foster' received an urgent call to carry out a medical evacuation of a crew member from the tanker 'Evrotas', which was en route from Norway to New York, situated approximately 30 miles east of Orkney. With the RNLI Lifeboat Medical Advisor aboard, the lifeboat launched from Kirkwall at 9:22 PM. The team successfully rendezvoused with the 'Evrotas' at 10:31 PM in increasingly rough seas, where spray engulfed the deck as the vessel sought shelter from the heavy waves. The 'Margaret Foster' faced challenging conditions, with the boat rising and falling by as much as ten feet, complicating the transfer of the casualty via a pilot ladder. Once aboard, the sick crewman underwent a medical assessment by the advisor. The lifeboat departed back to Kirkwall at 10:48 PM, arriving at the station by 12:15 AM, where an ambulance was waiting to transport the individual to Balfour Hospital for further care.
