Expedition Ship Takes on Water After Grounding Incident
On the evening of July 23, 2012, the expedition vessel "Expedition" encountered a serious situation when it ran aground near Isispynten, situated to the east of Nordaustlandet. Following this incident, the ship made its way to Longyearbyen, anchoring in the Advents Fjord on the afternoon of July 26. Initially, it was believed that the ship sustained no damage; however, subsequent assessments revealed that water was indeed entering the vessel. At the time of the grounding, the "Expedition" was carrying 157 individuals, which included 100 passengers and 57 crew members. In light of the water ingress, the captain shifted his initial plan to navigate towards Ny-Ålesund and opted instead to have divers inspect the vessel in Longyearbyen to assess the situation more thoroughly.
