Coast Guard Acts on Oil Spill from NOAA Vessel in Piscataqua River
On May 26, 2015, an oil discharge incident involving the NOAA research vessel 'Ferdinand R. Hassler' prompted a swift response from the US Coast Guard in the Piscataqua River. The discharge occurred around midday at the vessel's mooring in New Castle, New Hampshire, as the crew accidentally released oily water overboard. Acting promptly, the crew reported the incident to the Coast Guard, which swiftly mobilized resources. A collaborative unified command was established, involving the Coast Guard, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, and Enpro, to oversee the ongoing response efforts. Thus far, the oil spill has impacted one nearby anchored vessel; however, there have been no reports of pollution reaching the shore or harming local wildlife. Cleanup operations are actively ongoing to mitigate the effects of the spill.
NOAA Unveils New Vessel for Undersea Exploration and Safety
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has launched a state-of-the-art research vessel, measuring approximately 124 feet in length and 60 feet in width, named after the pioneering first superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey, a body established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807. This innovative ship is designed to survey and monitor the ever-changing seafloor, with the primary aim of supplying vital nautical charts to assist both commercial and recreational mariners. By accurately mapping underwater landscapes, the vessel will play a crucial role in preventing maritime incidents, such as groundings and collisions with submerged hazards. A commissioning ceremony for the vessel will take place on Friday, June 8, 2012, at NOAA's Marine Operations Center located in Norfolk, Virginia, as it undergoes final tests and integration of its advanced sonar systems. Once operational, the vessel will be stationed at its home port in New Castle, New Hampshire.
