Fire Erupts in Engine Room of MV Flintstone at Flushing Port

Dec 28, 2017 09:56

In the early hours of December 28, 2017, a significant fire broke out in the engine room of the MV Flintstone while docked at the Pechiney-Marine Terminal in Quarleshaven, located in the Vlissingen-Oost port area of Ritthem. Emergency response measures were swiftly initiated as a private firefighting unit, known as the COBRA team from Sluiskil, was dispatched due to their specialized ability to penetrate confined spaces and apply water to inaccessible fire spots. Additional firefighting resources included a foam extinguisher from Borssele and a water tank from East-Souburg, enhancing the firefighting effort. At approximately 12:45 a.m., the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) from the local fire brigade was activated, contributing their expertise in tackling maritime emergencies. By 1:45 a.m., an ambulance unit was called to the scene for precautionary measures. Firefighters faced challenges locating the blaze amid heavy smoke and intense heat, but by around 2:40 a.m., they succeeded in bringing the fire under control. The COBRA team was eventually deemed unnecessary as the fire brigade focused on ventilating the affected area. Pirate Attack Foiled as German Frigate Pursues Escaping Mother Ship

Jan 18, 2012 19:18

On the morning of January 17, 2012, the situation in the Horn of Africa heated up when the German frigate "Lübeck" attempted to intercept a fleeing pirate mother ship just after 8 a.m. The operation began when the frigate received an emergency distress call from the commercial vessel "Flintstone," which was under attack by two skiffs. Quick action from a private security team repelled the initial boarding attempt, forcing the pirates to retreat to their mother ship. In a determined effort to thwart the escape, the "Lübeck" aimed to conduct a search of the pirate vessel. After issuing multiple warnings, the frigate fired warning shots over the bow of the mother ship. However, the pirates responded by asserting that they would resist any boarding attempt, claiming to have hostages onboard. Faced with this serious situation, the "Lübeck" temporarily halted its fire but remains committed to stopping the rogue vessel. Despite the frigate’s attempts to corner the pirate ship, it was ultimately outmaneuvered and managed to escape towards Yemen. Meanwhile, the "Flintstone" continued its maiden voyage towards the Suez Canal, unharmed but shaken from the encounter.
