Stolt Florence Engulfed in Flames on the Rhine: A Harrowing Incident
On September 12, 2019, the chemical tanker 'Stolt Florence', weighing 3,644 gross tons (EU-No.: 02333731), encountered a fire while navigating the Rhine River at river kilometer 687.3, near Deutz port. The vessel, crewed by six individuals and en route to the Netherlands for ballasting, signaled an emergency when the captain detected smoke emanating from the engine room. Swiftly responding, he turned the tanker around and safely docked at the right bank of the river in Cologne. Emergency services, including the fire brigade and local police, promptly arrived at the scene. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the fire was extinguished with the help of a fireboat. Remarkably, traffic along the river remained uninterrupted during this ordeal. Preliminary assessments suggest that a technical malfunction might have triggered the fire. After the incident, the 'Stolt Florence' continued its journey, docking at Koedood Diesel Service BV in Papendrecht on September 16 at 8:40 a.m. For detailed coverage and visuals of the incident, you can refer to the German report available here: https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/12415/4373734.
Significant Collision on the Rhine River Involving 'Stolt Florence' and 'Tyro'
Early in the morning on March 7, 2018, a maritime incident unfolded on the Rhine River when the chemical tanker 'Stolt Florence' collided with the barge 'Tyro'. The 'Stolt Florence', measuring 3,644 gross tons (EU-No.: 02333731; MMSI-No.: 244730485; Call Sign: PB9581), was traveling upstream after departing Dormagen the previous evening at 10:45 p.m. At 6:50 a.m., near Lobith close to Tolkamer, it struck the 'Tyro', which weighed 1,106 gross tons (EU-No.: 02008214; MMSI-No.: 244630224; Call Sign: PI6255) and was heading in the opposite direction. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported; however, both vessels sustained significant damage. Following the incident, they proceeded to the port of Tolkamer for a thorough investigation. The 'Tyro', which had only left Tolkamer at 6:30 a.m., suffered damage to its port side, affecting the wheelhouse, cargo hatch, and hull, where bollards had been dislodged.
