In a notable turn of events, the Groen company from Scheveningen has sold the iconic coaster 'Fortuna' for conversion into a houseboat, destined for a mooring in Slikkerveer. Originally launched in 1954 under the name 'Geestroom' by the Shipyard A. Apol in Wirdum, Groningen, the vessel was commissioned by Waling van Geest & Zonen of 's-Gravenzande. Throughout its early years, the ship played a crucial role in transporting perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables from Maassluis to England, with livestock returning as cargo. However, 'Fortuna' faced a pivotal moment in its history on August 28, 1961, when it was tragically struck amidships while en route to Boston, England, by the Norwegian tanker 'Juranda.' The incident occurred in the Nieuwe Waterweg, between Maassluis and Hoek van Holland, resulting in the ship sinking, though all 11 crew members were fortunately rescued. Just a week later, on September 4, the wreck was successfully raised by a crane from the Van den Tak salvage company and repaired at De Groot en Van Vliet shipyard in Slikkerveer. By 1971, the era of transporting edible cargo ceased, leading to the vessel changing ownership multiple times before it was rebranded as 'Fortuna.' In 1972, the ship was repurposed for recreational fishing and came under the management of the Groen company. During this period, 'Fortuna' also served as a passenger vessel, famously offering cruises to the pirate radio ships Radio Veronica and Radio Noordzee, which were anchored off the coast of Scheveningen during the early 1970s. In 1998, the coaster transitioned into a chartered role, primarily functioning as a tender for goods and passengers along the east coast of Scotland, while also gaining experience as an offshore support vessel. One of its last major assignments as a maritime workhorse was as a guard vessel for the K13-A platform in the Dutch North Sea. Having completed its offshore assignments, 'Fortuna' made its final departure from its home port of Scheveningen on July 10, 2025. Now, this once-active coaster embarks on a new chapter as it prepares to become a beloved houseboat for future inhabitants.

On January 21, 2012, at 10 p.m., the KNRM stations in Egmond and IJmuiden were activated following an engine failure on the guard ship 'Fortuna,' which was stationed near the Amalia Offshore Windfarm off the coast of Egmond. The alert, issued by the Coastguard Centre in Den Helder, prompted the immediate response of the lifeboat 'Koos van Messel' from IJmuiden and 'Adrian Henri' from Egmond. At the time, conditions were quite challenging with a west-north-west gale reaching wind force nine on the Beaufort scale. However, as the lifeboats made their way to assist, they received an update indicating that the 'Fortuna' had successfully restored power. Consequently, both lifeboats returned to their respective stations, having averted a potential emergency in adverse weather conditions.
