On February 23, 2018, the freighter 'Bien Dong' made a heroic rescue of the crew from the Vietnamese coaster 'Binh Nguyen 86', which tragically sank in the Gulf of Tonkin. The coaster, registered at 1927 dwt (IMO No.: 8665648), went down at approximately 3 a.m. while situated about 40 miles off the coast of Ha Tinh Province, with coordinates 18°36'N 106°43'E. Following an emergency signal from the vessel, the Vietnamese Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) promptly redirected nearby ships to assist. The 'Bien Dong Freighter', navigating from Haiphong to Vung Tau, located two life rafts at 6:43 a.m., successfully rescuing five crew members. The final three survivors were found and saved by 7:30 a.m., all reported in stable condition. They were subsequently transferred to the patrol vessel 'SAR 411' and safely brought to Vung Tau.
