Engine Malfunction Strikes Freya Near Kiel Canal

Jan 28, 2017 21:02

On January 27, 2017, at 7:30 PM, the vessel 'Freya,' en route from Helsingborg, experienced significant engine issues while making its approach to the locks of the Kiel Canal at Kiel-Holtenau. The ship had to halt its approach and retrace its path back into the Kiel Fjord to address the malfunction. Crew members identified the root cause as a malfunction between the automatic and manual engine controls. Upon resolving the issue, 'Freya' resumed its attempt to enter the canal. The ship finally continued its journey at 11:30 PM and successfully docked at Athabaska Quay in Hamburg on January 28 at 11:00 AM.

Apostleship of the Sea Provides Support to Crew After Tragic Incident on Freya

Sep 05, 2014 08:24

Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) is lending crucial support to the crew of the cargo ship Freya following a harrowing incident that resulted in an 18-year-old Indonesian seafarer going overboard. The ship, which was en route to Immingham port, arrived late Wednesday night. AoS' port chaplain at Immingham, Fr Colum Kelly, was the first to board the vessel after receiving a call from the harbour master seeking assistance due to the extreme distress experienced by the crew. Fr Colum shared that the captain, alongside a crew member who witnessed the accident, was particularly affected by feelings of guilt and anger. He dedicated much of the night to offering comfort to the crew, which consists of ten members from Dutch, Russian, and Indonesian backgrounds. On Thursday morning, Fr Colum returned to the Freya to establish a Wi-Fi connection for the crew and to provide additional support. Reports indicate that the missing seafarer was serving on his first contract aboard the vessel. "Upon my departure this morning, the captain expressed his relief at having someone to comfort them rather than just pose questions about the incident," said Fr Colum. "While many inquiries remain, Apostleship of the Sea has done all we can at this moment." The Maritime and Coastguard Agency announced in a press release on Thursday that an extensive search operation was conducted overnight. This effort involved Humber and Cleethorpes RNLI lifeboats, a rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield, and 25 commercial vessels from the Grimsby area, all contributing to the search effort. Additionally, the Cleethorpes Coastguard Rescue Team carried out a thorough examination of the shoreline, but unfortunately, the missing seafarer has not been located. Source: Apostleship of the Sea

Search for Missing Crew Member from 'Freya' Suspended on River Humber

Sep 04, 2014 11:22

The search efforts for the crew member who fell overboard from the freighter 'Freya' have been paused as of now on the River Humber. The incident occurred on September 3, 2014, at approximately 8 p.m. when Humber Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) alerted the Coastguard about the distressing event near Grimsby while the vessel was en route to Immingham. A coordinated search operation was promptly launched, involving around 20 boats, including lifeboats from Humber and Cleethorpes, and a rescue helicopter dispatched from RAF Leconfield. Additionally, 25 commercial vessels from the Grimsby area joined the rescue effort, diligently scouring the river throughout the night. The Cleethorpes Coastguard Rescue Team also conducted thorough searches along the riverbanks; however, despite their extensive efforts, no trace of the missing man was found. Authorities have indicated that the Cleethorpes Coastguard may resume search operations in the future, including further shoreline investigations.
