Working Conditions Aboard the Fridtjof-Nansen

The Norwegian cruise line Hurtigruten has enlisted the expertise of Tenerife Shipyards to address issues with its vessel, the 'Fridtjof Nansen'. The ship has been docked at the eastern breakwater of Santa Cruz de Tenerife since April 18, after sailing in from Recife, Brazil. The Tenerife shipyard, part of the Hidramar Group, is committed to completing the essential repairs by April 21, with the aim of resuming the ship’s voyage as scheduled. The proactive measures taken by Hurtigruten highlight their dedication to maintaining the high standards of safety and service aboard their ships.

In a recent legal decision, the Hordaland District Court has cleared the chief officer of the 'Fridtjof Nansen' of any wrongdoing after a grounding incident that occurred on January 12, 2022. The vessel, which was caught in a storm off the coast of Måløy, sustained damages estimated at around 30 million Norwegian crowns. The chief officer had initially been summoned to court after his refusal to pay a 25,000-crown fine on February 12, 2025, following allegations of negligence. The police claimed that he had deviated from the pilot's navigation instructions and failed to adhere to the voyage plan, leading to a potential violation of the Ship Safety Act. However, during the proceedings, the chief officer maintained his innocence, as stated by his lawyer Torbjørn Kolås Sognefest. Ultimately, the court found insufficient evidence of negligence, resulting in the chief officer being acquitted of all charges and fines.

On November 28, the expedition cruise ship 'Fridtjof Nansen' returned to operations with Hurtigruten Expeditions (HX) after resolving a technical issue that had led to the cancellation of one of its scheduled cruises. Following expert repairs, the vessel set sail from Ushuaia, embarking on a remarkable ten-night expedition cruise featuring an exciting four-day journey to Antarctica. Looking ahead, the 'Fridtjof Nansen' is poised to offer an array of enticing itineraries in the region for the 2024-25 cruising season. Importantly, the incident did not compromise the safety or structural integrity of the vessel, as highly trained technicians were swiftly dispatched to address the problem.
