Working Conditions Aboard the Frio-Antwerp

On May 25, 2016, at approximately 1:40 p.m., the refrigerated cargo ship 'Frio Antwerp' experienced a fire in its cargo hold while docked in Marin for the unloading of 200 tons of frozen squid. The incident occurred during the lunch break when no dock workers were present inside the hold. Initial investigations revealed that the blaze originated from a malfunctioning forklift situated at the bottom of the third cargo hold. A significant plume of smoke billowed from the affected area, prompting a rapid response from emergency services and firefighters from Pontevedra. The firefighting team arrived on the scene with two vehicles, including six firefighters equipped with breathing apparatuses, who ventured into the hold using thermal imaging cameras and fire hoses. They faced considerable challenges due to the dense smoke that permeated corridors, cabins, and various deck levels rather than the fire's intensity itself. Once the source of the flames was identified, the firefighters were able to extinguish the fire successfully by around 4 p.m. Fortunately, the fire caused damage only to a truck within the hold, and there was no impact on the structure of the reefer or the cargo itself. However, health authorities will need to conduct an inspection to ensure safety. Following the firefighting efforts, the team extracted the damaged truck from the hold and ventilated the decks and living quarters, allowing the crew to safely return to the ship.
