On December 27, 2023, the Nigerian Navy Ship 'Beecroft' successfully apprehended three stowaways aboard the tanker 'Front Altair' in the Lagos roadstead, as it prepared for a voyage to Europe. The individuals, identified as 29-year-old Ebuka Daniel from Enugu State, and two 32-year-olds, Samuel Abraham from Edo State and Christian Happy from Delta State, were caught attempting illegal migration while concealed within the vessel's rudder compartment. The Nigerian Navy patrol team acted swiftly to prevent the stowaways from enduring potentially life-threatening conditions during their risky journey at sea. Reports indicate that they had gained access to the tanker with the help of local fishermen, who charged them fees of N20,000 and N5,000. The tanker had previously loaded 75,000 tons of naphtha at the Takeer Refinery Terminal in Ruwais and departed on June 11 at 7:30 p.m. As the vessel navigated through the Strait of Hormuz, it noticeably deviated from its intended course at 2:47 a.m. on June 13, with a speed drop from 13.5 knots before it ultimately began drifting mid-sea. Meanwhile, the "Hyundai Dubai," located approximately 6.8 nautical miles away, promptly corrected its course towards the distressed tanker upon receiving an emergency alert. It arrived to rescue 23 crew members who had abandoned the "Front Altair" due to a fire believed to have been triggered by a surface missile. Following salvage efforts by SMIT salvage, the tanker reached Dubai Dry Dock for repairs on July 17 at around 4 a.m. The maritime community continues to monitor this situation closely as further information becomes available.
