Successful Refloating of VLCC 'Alex' by SMIT Salvage Efforts

May 05, 2017 09:38

The Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), 'Alex', was successfully refloated on the afternoon of May 4, 2023, after being grounded. Following the refloating, the vessel remained in the vicinity of the grounding site for thorough inspections. To assist in the operation, a minimum of three powerful tugs were deployed to maneuver the ship off its grounding. By May 5, the salvage operation was bolstered by the presence of the tugs 'Pacific Valour' (IMO: 9443516), 'Logindo Stout' (IMO: 9548639), and 'Wei Gang Tuo 10' (IMO: 9548639). The salvage operation was conducted by SMIT Singapore Pte Ltd. in collaboration with PT Samudera Indonesia, which involved lightering the ship through a ship-to-ship transfer of its cargo. Nearby, the crude oil tanker 'Caktra Patriot' (IMO: 525019680) was anchored, possibly on standby for assistance. Ultimately, the 'Alex' was taken under tow by 'Pacific Valour' and headed for Singapore for further evaluation and repairs.
