In a dramatic maritime rescue, two crew members from the Swiss-flagged sailing yacht 'Nina Pope' (MMSI: 269107270) were saved, while one is sadly presumed to have drowned after the vessel sank approximately 2,400 kilometers southwest of Cape Town. The incident occurred on March 13, 2024, when the South African Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre initiated a swift response, calling upon the passing tanker 'Front Pollux' to change its course and assist the stranded individuals. Despite facing treacherous conditions with winds gusting up to 74 km/h and towering swells reaching eight meters, the heroic crew of 'Front Pollux' successfully retrieved two male survivors from a life raft. The yacht’s German captain, unfortunately, could not be rescued and is believed to have perished with the vessel. The survivors, one holding dual Swiss/US citizenship and the other Brazilian, have successfully made contact with their embassies in Cape Town, thanks to the assistance of the tanker crew. Fortunately, both men did not require medical attention and are currently en route to Cape Town, where they will be welcomed and assisted by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) emergency operations center (EOC) early next week.
