Significant Progress in Oil Transfer from FSO 'Nabarima'

Jan 22, 2021 11:31

As of January 17, 2021, approximately 50% of the crude oil stored aboard the floating storage and offloading unit (FSO) 'Nabarima,' which is positioned off the coast of Guiria in Sucre, has been successfully lightered to an oil tanker. This operation comes in response to concerns raised last October about the vessel's dangerous list, which heightened the risk of an oil spill impacting the Gulf of Paria. The U.S. State Department indicated that conducting such an intervention would not conflict with existing U.S. sanctions on Venezuela. The 'Nabarima' has remained inactive for two years, necessitating action to mitigate environmental risks. The Italian oil major Eni, holding a 26% interest in the Petrosucre joint venture alongside PDVSA, Venezuela's national oil company, has also offered assistance. PDVSA initiated its offloading operations on December 15, 2020, transferring oil to the sanctioned oil tanker 'Icaro,' which was anchored nearby. A total of 570,000 barrels were transferred from the 'Nabarima' to the 'Icaro,' culminating in the 'Icaro' completing its loading with 567,000 barrels of crude oil by January 17, 2021, using the barge 'Inmaculada' for the operation.

Crude Oil Transfer Initiated from Nabarima to Icaro

Dec 18, 2020 12:19

The Venezuelan state oil enterprise, PDVSA, has commenced the transfer of crude oil from the Floating Storage and Offloading unit (FSO) 'Nabarima', which is anchored in the Gulf of Paria. On December 16, the operation was supported by two Venezuelan-flagged vessels: the offshore supply vessel 'Seabulk St. Frances' and the tugboat 'Mare'. Nearby, the Panama-flagged tanker 'Icaro' was positioned to receive the crude. This operation entails a unique ship-to-ship transfer process, involving the loading of crude oil from 'Nabarima' onto a barge before transporting it to 'Icaro'. The entire operation is projected to unfold over several weeks and involves approximately 1.3 million barrels of crude oil. Additionally, maintenance work on crucial equipment, such as pumps and electrical motors, is currently underway to ensure smooth operations.

Commencement of Crude Oil Transfer from 'Nabarima'

Dec 16, 2020 11:51

In a significant development, the transfer of crude oil from the floating storage and unloading facility 'Nabarima' has officially begun, under the management of Venezuela's state-owned company linked to the Nicolás Maduro administration. Earlier this week, the first phase of this intricate operation was executed off the coast of the Paria peninsula, where oil is being transferred to the barge 'LA Immaculate'. This transfer process is expected to unfold over several weeks. Once filled, the barge will transport the crude to the tanker 'Ícaro' (IMO: 9038842), which set sail towards 'Nabarima' on December 15, anchoring in the Gulf of Paria. Notably, this storage facility contains an impressive volume of 1.3 million barrels of crude oil. The Maduro regime previously declined assistance from the European Union aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the storage facility.
