Tug Collision Incident Occurs Near Kalundborg

Feb 27, 2016 10:45

On February 25, 2016, shortly after noon, maritime operations took a turn for the unexpected off the coast of Kalundborg when the oil tanker 'Minerva Nike', arriving from Ust-Luga, collided with the tugboat 'Svitzer Trym'. The incident occurred during a ship-to-ship transfer operation intended to position the 'Minerva Nike' alongside another tanker, the 'Ridgebury Lindy B', for fuel transfer in the picturesque Kalundborg Fjord. During the intricate maneuvering process, 'Svitzer Trym' experienced a blackout, leading to the unfortunate collision with the 'Minerva Nike'. Fortunately, both vessels sustained only minor damages. Following the impact, the 'Minerva Nike' anchored safely in the fjord, while the 'Svitzer Trym' made its way back to Kalundborg, where it was subsequently detained by the Danish Maritime Authority for safety assessments. Meanwhile, the 'Ridgebury Lindy B' set sail later that evening, heading towards a temporary position off Kalundborg before continuing its journey to Skagen, with the United States as its destination. The authorities cleared the 'Minerva Nike' for release the following morning on February 26. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and safety protocols during maritime operations.
