Live Cattle Carriers Face Scrutiny Following Safety Inspections

Aug 15, 2018 22:13

Recent events have highlighted increasing scrutiny on live cattle carriers, particularly the "Yangtze Harmony," which was recently halted from departing Fremantle. This action came after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted a pre-loading inspection on August 12, 2018, and identified issues with the vessel's ventilation fans, rendering it unfit for loading livestock. Until the necessary repairs are made and the vessel meets the required mechanical standards, it will remain docked. The "Yangtze Harmony" is under the operation of Perth's Harmony Agriculture and Food Company. According to company director Steve Meerwald, the timeline for the vessel's repairs is currently uncertain. In a related note, AMSA has mandated modifications to the "Yangtze Fortune," the sister ship of the "Yangtze Harmony." Concerns were raised regarding the ship's unsuitability for voyages exceeding 10 days. The "Yangtze Fortune" is already embroiled in an investigation led by the Federal Agriculture Department after a tragic incident resulted in the loss of 33 cattle during its journey from Victoria to China in July. Following its arrival in Darwin on August 10, the ship underwent an inspection, where AMSA found that the drainage holes on the livestock decks were inadequate, hindering proper water drainage. Despite these challenges, the "Yangtze Fortune" has been granted permission for a one-time journey transporting 5,000 cattle from Darwin to Jakarta. As the live export industry faces mounting pressure, regulators and operators are urged to prioritize the welfare of livestock during long voyages.
