In a remarkable find, the wreck of the SS Tobol, a steamer torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1917, has been located during a survey of the MarramWind floating offshore wind farm site. Conducted by the Fugro Galaxy, this survey marks a significant exploration for what could become one of the initial floating offshore wind farms globally. The discovery not only sheds light on the vessel's whereabouts but also resolves a long-standing maritime enigma that lasted 107 years. Originally constructed in Sunderland, the ship was named SS Cheltenham before being seized by Russian naval forces in 1904. In 1905, it was incorporated into the Russian Imperial Navy and renamed the SS Tobol, later joining the Russian Volunteer Fleet in 1916. Tragically, it was torpedoed on September 11, 1917, while navigating from Blyth to Arkhangelsk. Following the wreck's identification, a precautionary exclusion zone of 250 meters has been established around the site, which appears to be remarkably well-preserved. While details of the Tobol’s sinking were already documented, the specifics of its location remained unknown. Authorities, including the UK Hydrographic Office and Historic Environment Scotland, have been informed of this important find. Ongoing discussions aim to create a long-term archaeological exclusion zone to ensure the wreck is adequately protected and preserved for future study.
