French Trawlers Captured in Faroese Waters for Fishing Violations

Jun 22, 2016 09:51

Authorities in the Faroe Islands have taken swift action by seizing four French trawlers, including the 'Haltenbank Pairtrawl', 'Cap Saint Georges', 'Andre Leduc' (249 gt, IMO: 9294915), and 'Bressay-Bank Pair Tr', due to fishing in a prohibited zone east of Fugløy. The incident occurred on June 19, 2016, when the Faroe Islands' Coastguard vessel 'Tjaldrið' discovered the trawlers operated by Boulogne-based company Euronor engaging in fishing activities in an area that had been recently closed due to high concentrations of juvenile fish. Following their interception, the two pair teams were escorted to Kollafjørður, where they docked later that night. Skippers from two of the trawlers assert they were not aware of the fishing ban and have refused to accept the penalties, pushing the matter into a legal dispute. While the Faroese authorities had notified their French counterparts regarding the closure, the message apparently did not reach the vessels before they were boarded. At the time of the apprehension, the pair teams had only just started their fishing activities and held minimal catch onboard.
