Collision Incident In The Gulf of Bothnia Involves FWN Solide and Kontio
In a notable maritime incident on January 22, 2019, the freighter FWN Solide collided with the icebreaker Kontio while navigating towards Oulu in the northeast region of the Gulf of Bothnia. The collision occurred around 10 a.m. as the FWN Solide was en route from Rotterdam, engaging in ice channeling activities. The incident resulted in a significant hole in the freighter's bulbous bow. Fortunately, there were no reported cases of water ingress or pollution leaks, though a moderate leak of ballast water was noted. On the other hand, the icebreaker Kontio emerged unscathed and continued its operations without delay. Following the collision, FWN Solide safely docked at Oulu at 10:30 a.m. After undergoing necessary repairs, the vessel departed Oulu on January 27 at 3:45 p.m., continuing its journey to Kemi, where it arrived at 9:35 p.m. The vessel later made its way to Rauma, successfully berthing there on January 29 at 6:45 p.m. For further details and visual documentation of the incident, visit the Finnish report with additional photos at https://www.raja.fi/tietoa/tiedotteet/1/0/rahtialuksella_ja_jaanmurtajalla_peraanajo_oulussa_76955.
Successful Recovery of Four Lost Containers by Argonaute
On February 9, 2013, the French vessel "Argonaute" successfully retrieved four tank containers that had been lost from the "UAL Europe" on February 6 while navigating off the British coast on its route from Las Palmas to Antwerp. The incident occurred around midnight, prompting the CROSS Corsen to notify British authorities promptly. In tandem, the operations center of the Navy (COM Brest) issued an urgent alert to mariners to monitor and report the position of the drifting containers. By late afternoon on February 7, a Maritime Patrol Atlantique 2 aircraft successfully located the containers approximately 90 nautical miles west of Ouessant. The following morning, a Cayman helicopter from the French Navy was dispatched to place a marker directly on one of the containers, allowing COM Brest to pinpoint the precise location. The "Argonaute" was then deployed, carrying a team of clearance divers along with the marine brigade of the Navy. By late morning on February 9, all four containers were successfully recovered. Of these, three were empty, while the fourth contained residual propane gas and was found to be leaking. Following the recovery, the "Argonaute" docked in the bay of Douarnenez for safety measures. Subsequent evaluations by the fire brigade determined that only minimal propane gas remained. On February 11, the "Argonaute" proceeded to port for the further processing of the retrieved containers.
