On July 10, 2021, at approximately 8:50 p.m., a maritime incident unfolded involving the container vessel m/v 'Zephyr Lumos' (IMO: 9864227) and the bulk carrier 'Galapagos' in the Malacca Strait, located near Melaka. This collision occurred while the 'Zephyr Lumos' was on its journey from Singapore to Suez, and the 'Galapagos' was making its way from Gladstone to Visakhapatnam. The incident took place roughly 14.1 nautical miles southwest of the Sungai Muar estuary, as both vessels were navigating westward. A steering failure on the 'Galapagos' caused it to veer to the right as the 'Zephyr Lumos' was overtaking, resulting in the bulk carrier being struck on its starboard side.
