On the morning of November 10, 2021, a dramatic rescue unfolded approximately 350 miles west of Monterey when the US Coast Guard stepped in to save seven crew members of the fishing vessel 'Blue Dragon', which had caught fire. The 11th Coast Guard District command center received multiple emergency signals, including alerts from the ship's emergency position-indicating radio beacon and personal location beacons, around 12:20 a.m. This prompted the coordination of a rescue operation, which included the launch of a C-27 Spartan aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento at 1:30 a.m. Utilizing the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER), the Coast Guard requested additional assistance as the 'Nord Rubicon', located 80 miles northwest of the sinking fishing vessel, agreed to alter its course to provide help to the mariners in distress, with an estimated time of arrival around 8 a.m. The C-27 aircrew reached the scene at 3:21 a.m. and reported that 'Blue Dragon' was engulfed in flames, but survivors were spotted taking refuge on a life raft nearby. The courageous fishermen had been signaling to the aircraft using flashlights. In response, the aircrew deployed a flare and a self-locating datum marker buoy (SLDMB) to aid in the rescue. By 8 a.m., a second C-27 aircrew was dispatched to assist, and the crew of the 'Nord Rubicon' arrived at the scene by 9:30 a.m. They successfully retrieved all seven crew members from the life raft. Thankfully, everyone was accounted for without any injuries reported. The 'Nord Rubicon', which was on its way from Nghi Son to San Francisco, continued its journey, now carrying the castaways aboard and expected to reach its destination by November 11.
