Working Conditions Aboard the Gas-Nordsee

In a dramatic rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard personnel in Karnataka successfully saved the crew of the cargo ship 'Sumithra', which tragically sank off Androth Island in Lakshadweep on December 15, 2017. The vessel had embarked from Beypore Port in Kozhikode, carrying construction materials and vegetables, but it had been drifting in turbulent waters near Androth Island since December 13 before succumbing to the fierce storm. The tanker 'Gaschem Nordsee', which was navigating the area at the time, came to the aid of the eight crew members aboard the 'Sumithra'. The Coast Guard ship 'Savithribai Phule', stationed in Mangaluru, was promptly dispatched to the scene; however, it arrived after the unfortunate sinking had already occurred. The crew was safely transferred from the 'Gaschem Nordsee' to the Indian Coast Guard vessel, where they received essential first aid, food, water, and medical attention. Subsequently, the rescued crew were handed over to the Lakshadweep administration at Androth Port on December 16, marking a successful conclusion to the harrowing incident.
