Pioneering ME-GIE Engine Successful on Gaschem Beluga During Transatlantic Voyage

May 18, 2017 11:05

In a groundbreaking achievement for the maritime industry, the world's inaugural ME-GIE (Gas Injection Ethane) two-stroke engine has demonstrated its functionality by completing successful gas trials aboard the Gaschem Beluga. This innovative liquefied ethylene gas (LEG) carrier was engaged in a journey from Houston, Texas, to the Bahamas. The engine, specifically the Mitsui-MAN B&W 7G50ME-C9.5-GIE, marks a significant milestone as it is the first of two units that will power two 36,000 cubic meter LEG carriers. These vessels were ordered from Sinopacific Offshore Engineering (SOE) in China by Hartmann Reederei located in Germany and Ocean Yield based in Norway. This advancement highlights a pivotal step toward more efficient and eco-friendly maritime propulsion technologies.

Delivery of Innovative Gas Carrier 'Gaschem Beluga' to Hartmann and SABIC

Nov 16, 2016 09:52

Ocean Yield ASA has officially taken delivery of the state-of-the-art liquefied ethylene gas carrier, 'Gaschem Beluga,' boasting a capacity of 38,000 cbm. This vessel, constructed by Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in China, marks the first of two sister ships, with the second slated for delivery on July 1, 2017. Upon its recent delivery, 'Gaschem Beluga' will embark on a significant 15-year bareboat charter agreement with the Hartmann Group. Following its journey, the vessel is set to enter a 10-year sub-charter with SABIC Petrochemicals B.V., expected to commence upon its arrival in Houston this December. The carrier will facilitate the transportation of ethane from Houston to SABIC's cracker operation situated in Teeside, UK. Notably, the eco-friendly LEG carrier features an ECO STAR design developed by the Hartmann Group. It is powered by a cutting-edge MAN B&W dual-fuel 2-stroke engine, enhancing its flexibility to operate on various fuels, including ethane. Additionally, the carrier includes a pioneering 'Star-Trilobe' tank, which provides nearly a 30% increase in capacity compared to traditional bilobe tank designs while maintaining the same exterior dimensions. Ocean Yield ASA’s Chief Executive Officer, Lars Solbakken, expressed enthusiasm for this delivery, stating, 'We are pleased to take delivery of the Gaschem Beluga which has a very innovative design and will be used to transport ethane for one of the world’s largest petrochemicals manufacturers.' This development underscores the ongoing commitment to innovation and efficiency in maritime logistics.
