Daring Offshore Rescue: 81-Year-Old Sailor Wheeled to Safety in Honolulu

Jun 15, 2012 10:39

On June 14, an 81-year-old resident of Washington made a safe arrival in Honolulu after an intense offshore rescue by the container ship "Horizon Reliance." This incident unfolded on June 11 when the elderly sailor suffered a stroke while navigating towards Hawaii, approximately 1,265 miles northeast of Oahu. Accompanied by his son and grandson aboard their 33-foot sailboat, "Gallivant," the trio had embarked on their journey from Olympia, Washington, on May 17. Thankfully, the sailor was in stable condition and received prompt medical attention upon reaching Honolulu. The crew of the "Horizon Reliance" carried him on a stretcher from the ship to a waiting ambulance. The situation escalated when the patient, having become partly paralyzed and unable to communicate, prompted his family doctor to recommend a medical evacuation via satellite phone. In response, his son and grandson reached out to the Coast Guard for urgent assistance. Given the sailboat's considerable distance from shore, dispatching a Coast Guard vessel would have taken too long. Utilizing the AMVER System, the Coast Guard identified that the "Horizon Reliance" was located roughly 73 miles northwest of the "Gallivant." During the three attempts to rescue the sailor, the yacht suffered damage as the life boat from the container ship struck it due to large swells. Coast Guard and AMVER Team Up for Successful Medevac of Stroke Victim at Sea

Jun 14, 2012 09:45

An 81-year-old mariner is now in stable condition following a dramatic medical evacuation operation involving the U.S. Coast Guard and the crew of the merchant vessel, "Horizon Reliance," on June 13, 2012. The sequence of events began at 9:30 a.m. on June 12 when the Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu learned about the medical emergency concerning Robert Bourdon, a crew member aboard the sailing vessel "Gallivant," located approximately 1,265 miles northeast of Oahu. After the Coast Guard Pacific Area received the distress call, the Coast Guard flight surgeon assessed the situation and recommended an urgent medical evacuation. Given the vast distance involved, the Coast Guard was unable to deploy assets in time to reach Bourdon effectively. To expedite assistance, the watchstanders sifted through the AMVER database and reached out to the nearby vessel, "Horizon Reliance," which was positioned roughly 73 miles northwest of the distressed "Gallivant." The crew aboard the "Gallivant," consisting of Bourdon, the vessel's owner, and his son, facilitated the transfer utilizing a small boat, successfully moving Bourdon to "Horizon Reliance" at around 4:30 p.m. on June 12. The "Horizon Reliance" is set to arrive in Honolulu on June 14, ensuring that Bourdon receives the medical attention he urgently needs. This collaborative effort underscores the critical role of maritime partnerships in safeguarding lives at sea.
