Gerd Maersk Experiences Engine Failure in Atlantic, Towed Near Porto
On April 26, 2012, the container ship Gerd Maersk encountered an engine failure while navigating the Atlantic Ocean, situated at approximately 41°28'N and 9°19'E, about 45 nautical miles northwest of Porto, Portugal. The vessel was making its way from Port Said to Bremerhaven at the time of the incident. In response to the emergency, the tugboat Castelo de Obidos was dispatched to assist the disabled ship. Reports indicate that the tug is towing Gerd Maersk westward, moving the vessel away from the coastline while the crew works to rectify the issue independently. As of 0100 UTC on April 27, both Gerd Maersk and the towing vessel were located at 41°32'N and 9°26'E, advancing at a speed of 1.5 knots in a westerly direction.
