In response to the alarming attack on the bulk carrier 'Eternity C' operated by Cosmo Shipmanagement in Athens, the tug 'Giant' has been dispatched to the Red Sea. This strategic deployment took place on July 23, 2025, following coordination between the Hellenic Association of Towboat Owners and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs in Athens. The primary mission of the 'Giant' is to bolster maritime safety and support global shipping operations in the region. Manned by a skilled team of 14 seasoned Greek sailors, the 'Giant' is powered by four robust 16,000 hp engines, allowing it to function effectively under challenging weather conditions. Equipped with an IACS navigator, the vessel is built for a variety of critical tasks, including providing assistance to distressed ships, combating maritime pollution, and safeguarding human lives. The 'Giant' boasts advanced firefighting capabilities, rated at Level 2, with the impressive ability to pump 7,200 cubic meters of water per hour from a distance of 200 meters, along with a comprehensive self-protection system for enhanced safety. Designed with a significant focus on search-and-rescue operations, the vessel includes accommodation for 40 individuals and has facilities to house both rescue teams and those rescued. Additionally, it features on-board hospital capabilities and can supply electricity to vessels in distress. This operation reinforces the commitment of the Greek government to protect Greek-owned vessels and their crews, stated Vassilis Kikilias, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy. The ministry emphasizes the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors to ensure a secure maritime environment.
