Historic Fishing Trawlers Rendered to Scrap in Esbjerg
In a significant maritime event, March 6, 1926, marked the end of the journey for two fishing trawlers, the "Minge" (IMO 6714809) and "Gilija." Having embarked on their final voyage from Skagen on March 5, these trawlers have reached the Smedegaarden scrapyard in Esbjerg, where they are set to be dismantled. This event underscores the cyclical nature of the fishing industry and the eventual fate of seafaring vessels.
Oil Leak Incident Involves Trawler Gilija Near Gotland
On December 9, 2017, a scheduled surveillance flight conducted by the Swedish Coastguard identified an oil leak from the trawler 'Gilija' in Kappelhamnsviken, located in northern Gotland. Initial evaluations suggested that the leak involved a minor emission of light oil. The Coastguard quickly mobilized the vessel 'KBV 310,' which arrived at the scene by 6 p.m. The anti-pollution vessel 'KBV 033' followed suit at 9 p.m., with the mission to investigate the nature of the emissions and implement environmental protection measures, such as preventing the spread of the oil and absorbing the spills. However, upon their arrival, the Coastguard teams found no visible signs of oil in Kappelhamnsviken. Continuing their efforts the next morning on December 10, the 'KBV 310' remained vigilant in searching for any oil traces. A second surveillance aircraft was deployed, which detected only thin strips of scattered oil that were deemed too dispersed for recovery. Subsequently, 'KBV 310' concluded its operations and returned to its regular duties. At that time, the 'Gilija' was moored off Gotland alongside the Lithuanian trawler 'Minge' (IMO No.: 6714809). Both vessels were reported to have arrived at the port of Västervik on December 12 at 4 p.m. For further details and photos, you can refer to the Swedish Coastguard's report at the following link: https://www.kustbevakningen.se/hallbar-havsmiljo/nyhetsarkiv/fiskefartyg-har-lackt-ut-olja-utanfor-gotland/
