On December 17, 2024, a Middelburg court announced sentences for seven individuals involved in a plot to extract 250 kilograms of cocaine from the bulk carrier 'Gina Oldendorff' earlier this year. The attempted drug removal took place at the end of January, but authorities were unable to locate the narcotics on the vessel, which was primarily loaded with coal. Despite this, the court established substantial evidence indicating the defendants' intent to acquire the illicit cargo. A pivotal figure in this case, a 43-year-old man from Rotterdam, received the most severe sentence of 30 months in prison, identified as the recruiter for the extraction operation. He maintained connections with two distinct groups arrested on January 21 and 22. From the group apprehended on January 21 at Kaloot, two members will serve prison sentences, while one was handed a suspended sentence along with 240 hours of community service. Furthermore, two minors involved are scheduled to face the juvenile court on February 10, 2025. The second group, arrested a day later at the OVET check-in desk, received prison terms ranging from 18 to 30 months. Notably, all nine convicted individuals are prohibited from contacting one another for a duration of three years. Violation of this order could lead to an additional two-week prison sentence for each occurrence, up to a maximum of six months. Moreover, they are barred from entering the ports of Flushing and Rotterdam during this same period, with similar penalties for any breaches of this restriction.
