Cattle Transport Vessel Stuck in Port Phillip Bay

Dec 10, 2015 09:52

A substantial live cattle transport vessel, the Singapore-flagged Girolando Express, has encountered operational issues and has been trapped in Port Phillip Bay for several days. The ship, which set sail from Geelong en route to Huanghua, China on December 6, found itself stranded after experiencing mechanical failures shortly after departing. According to reports from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the vessel remained stranded off Portarlington with 4,245 cattle onboard. Addressing concerns, Geelong Harbour Master Captain Dilip Abraham confirmed that there are no immediate animal welfare issues affecting the 3,500 breeding cattle on board. 'The ship began developing problems with steering and engine performance, leading the pilot to make the decision to anchor in Port Phillip Bay,' stated Captain Abraham. Although the mechanical issues have since been addressed, the ship requires additional provisions for the cattle due to their significant fodder consumption. The Girolando Express is scheduled to return to Geelong Port on Friday after the completion of necessary mechanical repairs. The vessel has remained anchored approximately six kilometers offshore from Port Arlington for the past three days.
