Morning Blaze Aboard Tug/Barge 'G.L. Ostrander' in Green Bay
On the morning of November 23, 2020, the Green Bay Metro Fire Department responded to an incident involving the tug/barge 'G.L. Ostrander' at LaFarge dock, located off 9th Street. Just before 6 a.m., a generator fire erupted on board the vessel, which was receiving a cargo of cement. Fortunately, the ship's crew acted swiftly, extinguishing the flames prior to the firefighters' arrival. Firefighters proceeded to ventilate the smoke and ensure that the fire was contained to the generator room at the port bow, confirming that no other areas were affected. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the generator fire, and both the U.S. Coast Guard and Port of Green Bay authorities have been alerted about the incident. The 'G.L. Ostrander' had recently arrived from Chicago to offload the cement cargo into the storage vessel 'S.T. Crapo'.
Collision Incident Between Pusher Tug and Ferry on Lake Huron
On June 12, 2014, a maritime incident unfolded on Lake Huron involving the passenger ferry 'Kristen D' and the pusher tug 'G.L. Ostrander.' The collision occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. as the 'Kristen D,' on its way to Bois Blanc Island, was traveling eastward through the region, while the 'G.L. Ostrander' was heading south toward Alpena, navigating through low visibility conditions. Fortunately, the impact resulted in only minor damages; the ferry sustained a 10-foot section of damage to its rub rail, while the tug experienced a minor dent on its forward port side. There were eight individuals on the ferry, comprising three crew members and five passengers, all of whom emerged unscathed. The US Coast Guard responded to the incident, allowing the 'Kristen D' to continue its operations later that afternoon. The 'G.L. Ostrander' was towing the 441-foot freight barge 'Integrity,' aggregating their lengths to 577 feet. A thorough investigation by the USCG Marine Casualty team is currently underway and may take up to 90 days to finalize the report on this incident.
