U.S. Coast Guard Helps Rescue Crew of Stranded Yacht 'Even Star' in Distress

Apr 02, 2014 09:44

In a dramatic rescue operation, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully coordinated the evacuation of three sailors from the distressed 42-foot yacht 'Even Star,' which was found sinking approximately 50 miles south of Balboa, Panama, on March 30, 2014. The incident unfolded when watchstanders at the 11th Coast Guard District rescue coordination center in Alameda, California, received an emergency distress signal from a U.S.-registered 406 MHz EPIRB at about 4:15 a.m. that day. Upon investigation, they traced the signal to the beleaguered vessel. Family members of the yacht’s owner informed the Coast Guard that the crew comprised three U.S. citizens who were undertaking a journey from California to Panama. Utilizing the Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) system, the Coast Guard issued a safety alert urging nearby vessels to assist in the urgent rescue. Responding to the call was the tanker 'Glenda Meryl,' reported to be about 30 miles from the scene and registered with the AMVER system. The tanker, en route from San Vincente, reached the location at approximately 5:23 p.m. and successfully retrieved the sailors who had encountered overwhelming flooding on board since March 29, which proved too much for their onboard pumps to manage. The trio then arrived safely in Balboa aboard the 'Glenda Meryl' on March 31. Additionally, communications and coordination for the rescue were aided by a ham radio operator associated with the Panama Air Force, further exemplifying the collaborative efforts in maritime safety.
