On the morning of May 21, 2019, the training vessel 'Golden Bear', under pilot guidance, experienced an allision with a crane on a pier while attempting to berth at Bridgetown, Barbados. The ship had embarked on its journey on May 5, with a meticulously planned itinerary that included stops in key ports such as Los Angeles, Barbados, Lisbon, the Azores, and Port Everglades. Aboard were 270 cadets from Cal Maritime, who were accompanied by 58 faculty and staff members. The incident resulted in damage to the ship’s mast, including its range light, which broke off upon impacting the lowered container crane. Following the accident, a temporary range light was installed, and the U.S. Coast Guard granted approval for necessary repairs. Once cleared, the Golden Bear resumed its training voyage as scheduled.
