Launch of the M.V. Golden Gate: Paving the Way for Ferry Commutes
In the midst of last week's celebration of Bike to Work Day, the Golden Gate Ferry Service is calling for the initiation of a Ferry to Work Day. Today marks a significant milestone with the debut of the M.V. Golden Gate, a state-of-the-art refurbished high-speed catamaran that was acquired two years ago by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. This newly launched ferry has officially commenced its operations on the Larkspur to San Francisco route. Originally built in 2009, the M.V. Golden Gate was sourced from the Washington State Ferry and has undergone an extensive upgrade to enhance passenger experience and efficiency. Alongside it, the M.V. Napa, which has been servicing the Marin residents since 2009, also showcases improvements funded by a $10 million budget dedicated to vessel refurbishments. These vessels were purchased for a total of $4 million through a collaborative effort of federal, state, and GGBHTD financing. With current market prices for new high-speed ferries reaching around $20 million, the initiative reflects a strategic investment in sustainable and efficient transportation options for commuters.
