Vessel 'Gorgoypikoos' Runs Aground on Columbia River
On June 2, 2019, the bulk carrier 'Gorgoypikoos' encountered a significant navigational incident while traversing the Columbia River. The vessel, en route from Vancouver, became grounded at coordinates 46°15'N 123°40'W on Miller Sands Bar, located east of Tongue Point. The incident occurred in the afternoon as the ship was moving at a speed of 10 knots when a malfunction in the steering control system caused it to become stuck in soft terrain. The Coast Guard Columbia River watchstanders quickly received reports of the grounding and took immediate action by dispatching a federal investigator on board a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment. Additionally, an aircrew in an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria was deployed for aerial monitoring. To ensure safety in the area, the Columbia River Pilots and Columbia River Bar Pilots closely monitored vessel traffic and issued travel restrictions due to the stern of the 'Gorgoypikoos' partially blocking the navigational channel. Although three tugboats were sent to assist, the vessel successfully dislodged itself from the sandbar during high tide early on the morning of June 3. Remarkably, there were no reported casualties or fuel spills as a result of the grounding. After freeing itself, the 'Gorgoypikoos' continued its journey to its original destination of Longview, where it arrived and docked at the Longview Port Authority General Cargo Terminals at 4 p.m. on June 3. The ship resumed its voyage on June 5 at 7:30 p.m., heading towards Kobe with an estimated arrival date of June 22.
