Tragic Fire at Chittagong Scrapyard Claims Lives of Two Workers
A devastating fire erupted on February 18, 2019, in the engine room of the decommissioned vessel 'Greek Warrior' during scrapping operations at Shagorika Ship Breaking Yard in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The incident resulted in the tragic deaths of two workers, 23-year-old cutter Md Jamil and his colleague Bipul, who were engaged in dismantling the ship. Jamil sustained severe burns and was immediately transported to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries before receiving treatment. Hours later, Bipul's body was recovered from the shipwreck. The Shagorika Ship Breaking Yard is linked to RA Shipbreaking Yard, both owned by the same entity, which has come under scrutiny following the acquisition of Nordic American Tankers' vessel, 'Nordic Sprite'. The 'Greek Warrior', originally owned by the Greek company Polembros Shipping, was sold to Bangladeshi breakers in 2018 and rebranded as 'S Warrior', with its flag transitioned from Panama to Palau before its final journey. This scrapping process involved Prayati Shipping Pvt. Ltd, a company based in Mumbai, India, known for providing a variety of maritime services, including demolition voyage management. The tragic incident has raised concerns about worker safety and the handling of scrapped vessels in shipbreaking yards.
