Falmouth Lifeboat Rescues Injured Crew Member from Green Guatemala

May 25, 2021 11:58

On May 21, 2021, a crew member aboard the 'Green Guatemala' suffered a severe shoulder injury following a fall in turbulent waters while navigating from the Irish Sea into the Celtic Sea on a voyage from Lagos to Las Palmas. Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Falmouth lifeboat was called to execute a medical evacuation after the vessel altered its course toward Falmouth. The arrival of the reefer in Falmouth Bay was anticipated during the early evening hours. At 5:52 p.m., the lifeboat was officially requested for launch, setting out at 6:10 p.m. into challenging sea conditions, characterized by a WSW wind of force 5-6 and moderate swell, with fair visibility amidst overcast skies and sporadic rain. A pilot had already been transferred to the ship and guided it into the relative shelter of the western side of Falmouth Bay. At 6:14 p.m., upon reaching the scene, the lifeboat maneuvered alongside the moving vessel to facilitate the casualty's transfer via the pilot ladder. By 6:22 p.m., the injured crew member was successfully aboard the lifeboat, where he received immediate medical assessment from two lifeboat crew members trained in casualty care, including a doctor. They swiftly made their way back to Falmouth, where the crew member was safely disembarked to await ambulance transport. He was subsequently transported to the hospital at 8:30 p.m. For detailed coverage and images from the incident, you can visit the Falmouth Packet website.

Vessel Detention in Sheerness Highlights Safety Management Failures

Dec 22, 2011 09:18

On November 13, 2011, a vessel faced a six-day detention in Sheerness due to critical safety compliance issues. Investigations revealed a consistent failure to provide adequate rest hours for the chief and second engineer since March, prior to the new Master taking over. This neglect raised serious concerns regarding adherence to the International Safety Management (ISM) code, suggesting systemic issues in operational management. Further inspections uncovered multiple deficiencies: broken embarkation steps, makeshift guard rails, corroded and damaged handrails, unsatisfactory cleanliness levels in both the engine and steering rooms, and an alarming presence of excessive hydraulic oil stored in numerous 45-gallon drums on deck. After these significant shortcomings were addressed, the vessel was released from detention on November 18, 2011.
