Improper Storage of Waste Oil Leads to Legal Action Against 'Perelik' Crew
On June 6, 2016, the cargo vessel 'Perelik' came under scrutiny during a routine port state control by officials from the Water Police Station Brake while docked at the Rhenus Nord terminal in Nordenham, after arriving from Abidjan. During the inspection, authorities discovered two severely corroded oil drums with easily detachable closures that were inadequately secured only by ropes on the ship's upper deck. Following a detailed examination, it was revealed that the drums contained waste oil, which had not been properly disposed of in Nordenham. This negligence in the correct handling and storage of hazardous materials prompted criminal proceedings against the ship's crew. The Oldenburg prosecutor imposed a security fine of 1,000 euros on both the 36-year-old Bulgarian captain and the 56-year-old Bulgarian chief. Meanwhile, the Port Authority of Brake mandated the responsible disposal of the waste oil while the 'Perelik' was docked in Nordenham.
