On February 14, 2019, the cargo ship "E.R. Kobe" experienced a fire in containers located on its upper deck while navigating through Chinese waters. At the time, the vessel was on a routine journey from Hong Kong to Shanghai. Following the incident, the ship was redirected back to Hong Kong, where firefighters believed they had successfully extinguished the blaze. However, on February 23, while anchored at Luhuashan, the fire reignited. The situation escalated on March 9, when the "E.R. Kobe" was moved to Shanghai and securely moored at Changxing. By March 13, the vessel was relocated to the inner anchorage of Shanghai, surrounded by search and rescue as well as firefighting vessels. After thorough efforts, the remaining 43 containers containing charcoal were safely discharged back at Luhuashan. Subsequently, the ship shifted from Yuanyuansha anchorage to the Waigaqiao terminal for further inspections. A comprehensive investigation into the cargo damage and claims process was launched, with all efforts coordinated among the charterer, agents, P&I clubs, and the respective port authorities. The "E.R. Kobe" is managed by ER Schiffahrt GmbH & Cie KG and regularly operates on the ICC service that includes a route spanning China, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and Sri Lanka. As of March 21, the vessel was still moored at coordinates 31° 53.42' N 122° 48.41' E off the coast of Shanghai. It successfully docked at Qianwan on March 31 at 7 p.m.
