Maersk Line Launches Innovative Waste Heat Recovery System on Arnold Maersk
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME) has successfully commenced operations of its cutting-edge waste heat recovery technology on the Arnold Maersk, a vessel owned by Maersk Line. The HydrocurrentTM Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Module 125EJW is designed to harness low-temperature heat sources for efficient electricity production aboard marine vessels. This pioneering ORC system taps into the waste heat generated by the main engine's jacket cooling water—approximately 85°C—to create electrical power at a cost-effective rate while significantly enhancing operational efficiency. With an impressive output of 125 kW, the installation of the ORC module on Arnold Maersk not only reduces the reliance on the ship’s main generator but also minimizes CO2 emissions. This innovative system follows a successful pilot project conducted by MHI-MME in collaboration with Calnetix Technologies, which culminated in performance testing and garnered the approval of ClassNK and Lloyd’s Register of Shipping in 2015.
Efforts Underway to Restore the Arnold Maersk to Operational Status
On November 25, the cargo vessel 'Arnold Maersk' remained docked in Seattle as crew members and workers focused diligently on restoring the ship to seaworthy condition. Fortunately, the Arnold Maersk did not sustain damage during the storm that resulted in the loss of several cargo containers near Dutch Harbor. However, big waves did displace numerous other containers onboard, prompting an urgent cleanup operation. In total, 18 containers were lost overboard, while approximately 50 others incurred varying degrees of damage. Workers are actively removing the affected containers to allow the 'Arnold Maersk' to return to its regular shipping schedule. Cargo Ship 'Arnold Maersk' Arrives in Seattle After Storm-Related Container Disasters
The Arnold Maersk, a prominent cargo vessel, has docked in Seattle following a harrowing incident near Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where turbulent seas wreaked havoc on its cargo. A powerful wave surged over the ship's stern, resulting in the loss of 18 containers and inflicting damage on approximately 50 others, according to Coast Guard spokesperson Kathleen McCaffrey. Salvaging efforts must take place before the ship can continue its journey. Fortunately, the vessel, which was en route from Pusan, South Korea, does not require any repairs itself. While such incidents are not unusual, McCaffrey noted that an average of only five containers typically end up in the water. The Arnold Maersk has drawn considerable public interest, visible from Highway 99, as crews work to address the fallout from this maritime mishap.
