Milestone for Melbourne: Victoria International Container Terminal Welcomes Its First Vessel
Next Sunday marks a significant milestone for the Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) as it prepares to welcome its inaugural vessel, the E.R. Long Beach. This colossal containership, managed by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), boasts a remarkable capacity of 7,455 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and will dock at the terminal located at Webb Dock. This arrival is particularly noteworthy as it challenges the traditional berthing facilities at Swanson Dock along the Yarra River. The introduction of such large vessels has raised concerns regarding congestion on terminal approaches and landside logistics. Additionally, logistics companies and their drivers face the challenge of obtaining Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) accreditation. Neil Chambers, director of Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA), stated, "Export container receivals for the vessel commence in earnest from Monday, 20th February." He further emphasized the importance of container transport operators registering with VICT via 1-Stop to access the Vehicle Booking System (VBS), along with drivers completing their online MSIC inductions through the same platform before gaining access to the terminal.
