The master reportedly took his own life, leaving the crew deeply shaken and traumatized by the experience. AoS port chaplain Fr Colum Kelly, along with two other chaplains from different maritime charities, boarded the Santa Bettina upon its arrival in Tilbury on May 21 to provide essential pastoral care. Fr Colum reflected on their visit, stating, "All three of us dedicated our time to listening to the crew and understanding the immense stress they were under during the trip. The captain's tragic death occurred just a week after departure, and this was the crew’s first voyage with him, leaving them with scant knowledge about their captain." The crew faced additional anguish as the captain’s body remained in his sealed cabin for the remainder of the journey, with particular distress felt by a young seafarer who discovered the body, marking his first encounter with a corpse. In a show of solidarity, the crew requested a Mass to be held on board and to have certain areas of the ship blessed, including cabins and the location where the captain was found. Fr Colum noted, "It was a poignant way to conclude our time aboard and we could feel the crew’s sense of relief afterward."
